A Study Illness and Health Care Patternsof Seoul City Primary, Middle and High School Teachers



Abstract
A survey on the illness health care patterns and attitudes toward the medical insurance of Seoul City primary,middle and high school teachers was conducted during the period from June 1st-to June 30th, 1974 and from October lst to October 31st, 1974. A total of 322 teachers were studied in June and 1290 in October.
The results were as follows;
1. The monthly prevalence rate of self-reported illness was 12.17% in May, and 24.0% in August for male teachers; 24.7% and 44.3% respectively.for,female teachers.2. Monthly rate of absence from duty due to sickness was 6.6% in May and 7.7% in :September for male teachers, while 11.5% and 11.8% respectively for female teachers.
3. he prevalence rate of chronic diseases was 14.2% among male teachers and 16.5% among female teachers.
4. -8.7 % of mal. teachers and 20.9% of female teachers stated.that they have one or more diseases.. which they would have treated if there were a chance to do so without economic burden..
5. The rates of treatment for illness were 90.8% in May and 88.9%. in September for male teachers while 66.5% and 82.0% respectively for female teachers. The most frequent source of treatment was drug stores.
6. The rate of teachersadmitted to hospitals during a one year period was 2. 0% for male teachers and 4.4% for female teachers.
7. The incidence rate of surgical operations for one year was 1.4% for male teachers and.4.6% for female teachers.
8. The dental treatment service rate for one year was 14.5% among male teachers and 20.6% among female teachers.
9. 41.8% of male teachers and 45.0% of female teachers purchased drugs from drug stores duri g a one month period without doctor prescription.
10. The average monthly medical expense per capita, excluding fee for purchasing drugs from drug stores, amqunted tow 1,356.
11. The average number of dependents per-teacher for married teachers was four. The monthly prevalence rate of diseases for these dependents was 7.9%.
12. The average health care expenditure per teacher¢¥s family was w 5,4-90 per teacher.
13. 27.6% of the teachers stated that health care expenditures for them and their family were burdensome, but the rest said that they were not too high.
14. 67.2% of male teachers and 60.0%`of female teachers said that they and their family would join the health insurance program.
